An Epitaph Summary

There is no poet in England or perhaps in any other country with whom Walter de la Mare may be compared.
The poem is an epitaph.
The poet wishes for it to be written on a stone near the resting place of the extraordinary woman he deeply cherished. It is a philosophical poem. The poem reflects the idea that no one can escape death’s harsh grip, and that many who once admired and celebrated him in life are now only memories
They believe in the theory of out of sight, out of mind.
The poet talks about the lady endowed with rare beauty. The poet seems to be deeply in love with her. Although he hopes she could live eternally, he understands the undeniable truth that everything material is destined to fade. He is quite sure of what will happen to the lady after he is no more. He has serious apprehension that nobody will remember the beautiful lady in the grave after he is no more. Beauty, however rare, is perishable.
