‘The soldier’ is a poem written by Rupert Brooke.
Brooke is remembered as a ‘war poet’ who inspired patriotism in the early face of the first world war. The poem is written in the form of a Sonnet.
This poem may be described as the poet’s epitaph. This is a war poem. Here the poet speaks in the role of an English Soldier. patriotism means love for Once motherland. It is really a patriotic poem.
If an English Soldier happens to die in a foreign land, he will be buried in a foreign field. He fancies that his burial spot will become for ever a part of England. His body will be reduced to dust, and it will make the foreign field Richer. He was born and brought up in England. His personality was moulded in England. He was found of English flowers and he liked to move about in the English countryside. His body belong to England and he breathted English air. He loved the English scenery and English sounds.
The poet is not afraid of death. But is the grim possibility of death away from home that is so painful to him. Even so, he has comfort in the fact that no matter where he dies, he will always be an Englishman. He will continue to love his countrymen even after his death. He carries his English nationality even to a foreign country.

'सैनिक' रूपर्ट ब्रुक द्वारा लिखी गई एक कविता है।
ब्रुक को एक 'युद्ध कवि' के रूप में याद किया जाता है, जिन्होंने प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के शुरुआती दौर में देशभक्ति की भावना जगाई थी। 
कविता सॉनेट के रूप में लिखी गई है।
इस कविता को कवि का समाधि-लेख कहा जा सकता है। यह एक युद्ध कविता है। यहाँ कवि एक अंग्रेज सैनिक की भूमिका में बोलता है। 
देशभक्ति का अर्थ है अपनी मातृभूमि के प्रति प्रेम। यह वास्तव में एक देशभक्ति कविता है।
यदि कोई अंग्रेज सैनिक किसी विदेशी भूमि पर मरता है, तो उसे किसी विदेशी भूमि पर दफनाया जाएगा। उसे लगता है 
कि उसका दफ़न स्थल हमेशा के लिए इंग्लैंड का हिस्सा बन जाएगा। उसका शरीर धूल में मिल जाएगा, और इससे विदेशी भूमि समृद्ध हो जाएगी। 
वह इंग्लैंड में पैदा हुआ और पला-बढ़ा। उसका व्यक्तित्व इंग्लैंड में ही बना था। उसे अंग्रेजी फूल पसंद थे और उसे अंग्रेजी ग्रामीण इलाकों में घूमना पसंद था। 
उसका शरीर इंग्लैंड का था और वह अंग्रेजी हवा में सांस लेता था। उसे अंग्रेजी दृश्य और अंग्रेजी ध्वनियाँ पसंद थीं।
कवि मृत्यु से नहीं डरता। लेकिन घर से दूर मौत की भयावह संभावना ही उसके लिए इतनी पीड़ादायक है। फिर भी, 
उसे इस बात से तसल्ली है कि चाहे वह कहीं भी मर जाए, वह हमेशा अंग्रेज ही रहेगा। वह अपनी मृत्यु के बाद भी अपने देशवासियों से प्यार करता रहेगा। 
वह अपनी अंग्रेजी राष्ट्रीयता को विदेश में भी साथ लेकर जाता है।
